MT SAGAN | Ran aground at Suwanosejima, Japan
MT SAGAN
En-route from Kaohsiung to Ulsan the vessel encountered engine problems during severe weather conditions on the 11th of February and subsequently ran aground on the remote island Suwanosejima, located in the East China Sea. Japan based Nippon Salvage Corporation was awarded the contract to remove the bunkers and refloat the vessel. A Singapore based Salvage Consultant was mobilised to the site to assist the P&I underwriters.

Shortly after leaving the port of Guayaquil on the 23rd of February, en-rout to the Galapagos Islands, the vessel grounded on a sandbank, developed a list to starboard and subsequently capsized. The vessel was loaded with about 160 containers on board of which some were drifting away from the incident location. The government of the Galapagos Islands declared the state of emergency, as the supply lines were disrupted due to this incident. SMIT Salvage was contracted on a LOF contract and invoked the SCOPIC Clause. A SCR from The Netherlands was mobilised to site immediately.
